Digging in Dark Places – Cave Palaeontology in western North America - Chris Jass

Dr. Chris Jass has spent ~30 years working to recover Quaternary (Ice Age) fossils from cave

deposits across western North America. Research taking place in Alberta and across the

western U.S. highlights several logistical challenges to cave research, ranging from remote

access, vertical rappels, and cramped spaces, to bears and rattlesnakes. Despite those

challenges, the effort is often worth it, as caves can preserve rich, unique vertebrate records

that inform our understanding of the Ice Age history of mountainous areas of the West. Join

Chris on a life-long journey that is revealing some of the Ice Age information hidden in the dark

places of the Rocky Mountains of Canada, Great Basin of Nevada, and Black Hills of South

Dakota.
